Saab, like other former GM brands too has a new owner in Koenigsegg. Who is this Koenigsegg? This is a custom car manufacturer who makes just a few super luxury cars per year, each of which costs more than a $1 million. It is a small company with an employee strength of 45. Compare this with Saab. Though Saab too is considered a small brand in the global automobile market pecking order, it normally sells about 130,000 units per year and has 4,000 employees.
The question to ask is whether a 45 member company can run and turnaround a 4,000 employee company. I would say ‘yes’. Saab since its acquisition by GM had lost it uniqueness, becoming just one of the many GM’s brands. It may now be able to recover its special niche under new ownership.
